HAPPINESS: HOW TO BE COMPLETELY HAPPY
By Lucy pin 4552
Happiness is an emotional state of well-being.
People generally define happiness as a “Positive state of mind” or “A feeling of peace in the mind” or “A sense of gratitude or wholeness”.
It would be easy for someone to say, “I feel happy today because I got all my chores done!” Or, “I feel happy as I am in love”. Or “I am happy because everything is going the way I planned”.
Because quite often when we mention a feeling of “being happy” we are often referring to how we feel at the present time, not necessarily how we feel mentally overall.
Happiness is often to do with our balance of emotions, the release of serotonin “the happy chemical in the brain and body,” and also our own sense of self-worth and personal sense of achievement.
WHAT IS HAPPINESS?
We can often resort to feeling depleted when we are not in control or feel we have failed in some way. Yet achievement can be one of the simplest of tasks. Achieving your work goal, fitting into that new dress or receiving a compliment. These are all little things that can add up to the overall feeling of contentment and wellbeing.
But some people might ask “How do we find happiness within?”
Is it spiritual?
Could it be emotional?
Or is it physical or is it mental?
Well, the true answer to that, is that this question is merely subjective! Because different aspects of life and how we react to them, mean different things for different people! Depending on where you are your life path, and your likes and dislikes, will depend upon whether you are happy or not right now.
WHAT IS TRUE HAPPINESS?
The first thing to take account of when we are trying to define what true happiness is, is to think about a time where we had no expectation of ourselves or others, nor did we have unrealistic goals and were happy. Examining this and doing a little self-analysis can open up the path you may need to take.
For example, do you need to be doing something to feel happy? Are you only happy when you are buying something? Are you only happy in certain situations and what are these? If so, this can be described as a sense of false happiness. If you feel you need to be in a relationship to be happy, then again this is a false trick of the mind and more about avoiding what your true self needs to feel happy.
HAPPINESS
In order to be happy with anything in life, a job, a relationship, a goal, we need to be happy and at peace within ourselves! There is no one answer to find that true sense of self, but the general concept is to simply be alone in one’s thoughts and to accept the self just as it is, in order to find true peace and vitality.
Believe it or not happiness is actually quite a hard word to define and find true meaning in! There has been lots of concepts of this over the years, and Greek philosopher Aristotle suggested that there are actually four different types:
THE 4 KINDS OF HAPPINESS
Happiness depends upon ourselves” – Aristotle
Aristotle distinguished between four different levels of happiness.
Happiness level 1: Laetus. Happiness from material objects.
This kind of happiness is termed as being short lived. We experience this when we buy a new car or house, or just take pleasure generally in something materialistic.
Happiness level 2: Felix. Ego gratification. Happiness from comparison: being better, more admired than others etc.
This is a rather ego-based happiness, and it can be additive through achievement. Those that become very competitive for example, whether games or a career. However, this is tremendous to experience in moderation, like when we pass an exam or complete a 5k run! We cannot permanently maintain this.
Happiness level 3: Beatitudo. The happiness from doing good for others and making the world a better place.
This type of happiness is kindly and compassionate, and often bestows all sorts of empathy and kindness from within. It comes from goodness and rewards. Like when you listen to your friend’s problems or do something charitable. It is even experienced through romance. An example is when you feel affection for someone very deeply, and you feel that love is making the world around you a better place. This can happen by, for example, joining a successful group, or taking part in a charity, even rescuing a cat!
Happiness level 4: Happiness level 4: Sublime Beatitudo. Ultimate, perfect happiness
This is the ultimate happiness. When we start to appreciate that we don’t need things or people to make us happy. It is more accepting that even if we have bad days, we still feel that glimmer of hope and sense of peace when we see the sun bursting through the sky. This is a more balanced type of feeling happy, which often people experience when they feel they are doing the right thing in life.
HOW TO BE COMPLETELY HAPPY
To sum up, it is easy to be happy about small things that don’t last long, and different type of happiness last longer than others, but being happy both externally and internally formulates itself in such a way that we gain it often through the wisdom of experience. This is most likely why it is number four on the list!
We often spend periods of time doing things we don’t want to, not being true to our real selves, or putting up with stuff because we don’t know what else to do. These are all clearly not conducive to creating our own true sense of feeling happy. While true happiness as noted above is individual and different for every person, there are some basic steps we can take to shortcut to achieving it more quickly.
A WORK IN PROGRESS
Remember that happiness in its highest and most perfect form is a work in progress and needs to be worked on. Do more of what you want. Recognise your potential. Watch less television and see advertisements, super models and such like as being unrealistic icons. Do not create unnecessary needs or be persuaded that you need to own things which you don’t. Be grateful for what you do have, share your knowledge, and help where you can. Smile as much as you can and take opportunities when they are presented to you. Be open, be aware, see beauty….
Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.
