The Meaning of Dreams
Do you dream? Do dreams actually mean anything? Why do we only remember some of our dreams? Join us to discover the answer to these questions and more, right here!
DREAMS: SCIENTIFIC THEORIES
According to scientists, just about everyone dreams every time they sleep, and those dreams can be exciting, terrifying, or just plain weird! In research it has been found that people from all over the world often dream the same dreams. Dreams like being chased. Or how about falling, feeling unable to move, arriving late? Or even the most common, which is being naked in public!
The brain is in fact active all night. But, it is only during the rapid eye movement (REM) part of sleep that we dream. REM usually lasts about 2 hours. During this time we can have several different dreams, which typically last between 5 and 20 minutes each.
We forget around 95% of our dreams quickly after waking. One theory as to why dreams are so hard to remember, is that the changes in our brains that occur during sleep, do not support the information processing and storage that is needed to form a memory.
WELL DONE SIGMUND!
Well-known psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud described dreams as the road to the unconscious. He put forward the idea that by looking at the content of dreams, we could bring new light to our subconscious desires. This in turn could lead to a better understanding of our mental health, as well as better being able to achieve our true needs and desires. Lately, this has perhaps become even more important than ever to acknowledge and recognise.
This happened all the way back in 1895 and Mr Freud was widely criticised for his theory. Don’t you think it is interesting that decades later, the question behind dreaming is still very much up for debate?
WHAT DO OUR DREAMS MEAN?
Analysing dream symbols and setting down their meaning has become a popular source of both interest and for self-reflection in some cultures.
If you would like to know the significance of your dreams, before you go to sleep, begin by simply asking yourself to remember your dreams. This can take a bit of practice, so be patient! Next to your bed keep a notepad and something to write with. If you wake up in the night, jot down what you were dreaming about. Do this while the memories are still fresh in your mind. Do the same again when you wake in the morning.
The more you practice this ritual, the clearer the memories of your dreams become. Then you can start to have a look at what your dreams are telling you. You can either do this by researching online, or with the help of a Dream Analyst.
MOST COMMON DREAMS!
DREAMS ABOUT FALLING
Have you ever had a dream about falling? Most of us have experienced this indescribable feeling and feel quite relieved to wake up. The wake up can often happen with a jolt, giving us a feeling of shock. There is a popular myth that if you hit the ground, you might not survive! But, you will be glad to hear this is not believed to be true!
Many studies have revealed that falling in dreams is a sign that something in your life isn’t going as well as you would like it to. It could be a pointer that you need to rethink a choice or consider a new path in a particular area of your life.
BEING CHASED
A very common dream. Dream Analysts suggest that being chased in a dream could mean you are trying to avoid something in your day-to-day life. Or even, that you have a need to escape from your own desires and fears.
FLYING
Dreams about flying can be quite exciting, especially if, in your day-to day-life, you are afraid of heights. There are two theories here, one being that there is a desire to escape from the realities of life, and the other is a longing for independence and freedom from a particular situation.
LOOSING TEETH
What a rotten dream! yet many people have this! Traditionally, the Dream books will say that dreaming of losing teeth means a loss of money. Yet psychologically, it is thought to mean that you are feeling unattractive for some reason. Alternatively, perhaps you said something which you wish you hadn’t!
The basis of all these ideas is a simple one: Teeth are a symbol of strength, hence dreaming they have fallen out is like losing your own personal power. Your subconscious is pinpointing an area where you feel dissatisfied.
BEING NAKED IN PUBLIC
Oh, the shame of dreaming that you were walking down the street without a stitch on, or turning up at the school gate and realising you had forgotten to get dressed! Public nudity dreams suggest that you are afraid of revealing your true self, imperfections, and shortcomings.
UNDERSTANDING OUR DREAMS
In conclusion, dreams may help us deal with emotions we all experience in our everyday lives. Scientists know that that the same areas of your brain are active when you are dealing with emotional situations and when you are dreaming. So, dreaming is like a fight or flight training ground to help you in your waking hours.
In fact, our dreams are revealing our emotions, bringing things that need addressing to our attention. Or they could be trying to yell out some of our needs, which perhaps we are ignoring in our waking hours. Sometimes even those we may yet be unaware of in our every day lives. Your brain might also use your dreams to sort through information you have collected through the day. Then it stores the important information in your long-term memory and then ditches the rest!
