We all know the Tarot cards. Generally, when we think of a Tarot card reading, we think of a spread of 3 cards or more. Often we think of a longer reading, such as a Celtic cross. But can the Tarot cards give you a simple, decisive yes or no answer? And how do you get a yes or no answer using a set of cards which usually gives quite detailed guidance? We tell you what you need to know here.
TAROT YES OR NO: REALLY?
There are several easy ways you can get Tarot yes or no answers. First, really do consider if you really want a yes or no answer using the Tarot cards. Don’t you want to know more, rather than just having a straight yes or no reply? If you DO want more information or to know how something will happen, then in reality, you probably want more than just a yes or no answer 😊
The Tarot cards are deeply detailed and intended to give quite in-depth guidance. Therefore, just getting a yes or no answer in some respects, is cheating the cards of their worth! A pendulum can easily give you yes or no answers and it is intended for that purpose. One thing is certain, if you want a genuine Tarot yes or no answer, you really need to spend a little time to prepare and give the cards the time and energy they are due.
Whatever technique you decide to use for your Tarot yes or no answers, spend the time to shuffle the cards carefully, give yourself some quiet time, preferably sitting with your feet flat on the floor. Take a moment to breathe and be careful to focus on your question when you shuffle. Make sure also this question is completely clear and there is no confusion. You may also write your question down to make sure of this.
- Ask a clear question that has a clear yes or no answer
- This means asking closed questions like “Will such and such happen?” and not open questions like “How will such and such happen?”
- Don’t ask two questions within one sentence, as this can also cause confusion.
TECHNIQUES FOR TAROT YES OR NO

USE THE MAJOR ARCANA ONLY
The meaning of each of the Major Arcana cards is pretty clear. Cards like the Star, the Sun, the World, are generally positive cards. Whereas, cards like the Tower or the Devil card are generally accepted as being negative. Thus, it is easy to use the imagery on the Major Arcana cards to get a yes or no answer. Simply take your 22 Major Arcana cards out of your 78 card deck. Shuffle and pick one of your 22 cards.
2 SPLIT THE DECK
Ensure your deck has a good mixture of cards in the upright and inversed positions, before you begin. If they are all upright, sort the deck so each second card is inversed. This can often be done by simply cutting the pack in half, reversing one half and replacing back with the others. Then, carefully shuffle the cards. Cut the cards asking your question to get your reply. If you card is upright, take it as a yes answer. If it is inversed, take it as a no answer.
3 TAROT YES, NO OR MAYBE!
Give your Tarot cards to give you a yes, no, or a chance to refuse to answer! Select 2 cards you know are positive. 2 cards you feel are negative and two cards which you feel are neutral. The latter cards are the ones where you give the Tarot deck the chance to give you a neutral answer. Deal the cards in two rows of 3. Now pick your card.

USE 1 and 1
Select one card as a positive card and one as negative. Remember your cards. Then insert them back into your tarot deck. Shuffle the cards and cut them. Now take one of the two cut piles. Deal the cards one after the other, face up. Which ever of the two cards comes up first gives you your answer.

USE THE SYMBOLS
There is so much detail on every Tarot card. In most decks, you can get carried away with the imagery! Once you really start delving deeper, each Tarot card has one or more important symbols. Carefully go through your cards and pick a symbol that resonates with your situation, with an opposing one that doesn’t. For example
- A new Moon for new beginnings ( yes) and a Full Moon for endings (no)
- A Sun symbol for yes, a moon for no
Now shuffle your cards and turn them over one by one. You will get your yes or no answer when the first symbol of your chosen two is turned up first.
