WITH THE MEANING OF COLOURS
Have you ever wondered about the meaning of colours? Do you have a favourite colour, a colour that makes you feel all warm and glowy inside and perks up your mood? Or on the opposite spectrum, a colour that instantly makes you on edge?
WHAT IS THE PSYCHOLOGY OF COLOUR
The Artist, Pablo Picasso was always fascinated with the meaning of colours. He believed that “Colours, like features, follow the changes of the emotions.” And, if you have ever seen one of his paintings you will immediately see what he means!
English scientist Sir Isaac Newton was famously known for discovering gravity, when an apple hit him on the head, whilst sitting under a tree. He was also captivated by colours. In 1666, he noticed that when pure white light passes through a prism, it separates into all the visible colours.
In fact, for many centuries our ancestors have known the importance of understanding how colour affects our mood, be it in what we wear or in our homes. Even down to what the colour of our front door means! So how exactly does colour work, what are the meaning of colours and how can a colour impact our behaviour and mood?
THE SPIRITUAL MEANING OF COLOURS
Most people only see the seven prominent colours in the colour spectrum, but never really know about the meaning of colours. The prominent colours are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.
We associate these colours with a beautiful rainbow and as a child most learnt a rhyme to remember the pattern the colours formed. Red and Yellow and Pink and Green, Purple and Orange and Blue. I can see a Rainbow, see a Rainbow, see a Rainbow too! Let’s take a look at the main colours in the colour spectrum and find out about the meaning of colours!
THE MEANING OF COLOURS:
RED
Red is a powerful colour with a meaning representing strength and romance. It can also mean passion, anger and fury! Red is often used as a warning or stop command, as in traffic lights.
But, when love is in the airs so to is the colour Red. Think lipstick and sexy underwear!
ORANGE
ORANGE: the colour of an extrovert. Because Orange is a blend of red and yellow, you can see how this colour is full of energy and warmth, but also impatience. Orange is a good friend when looking for a helping hand with your intuition.
If you hit a rocky spot in your life, Orange will remind you that there’s always light at the end of the tunnel. And Colour Psychologists, who study the meaning of colours, teach us that seeing the colour Orange can help awaken hope, motivation, and positivity!
YELLOW
YELLOW: you either love it or hate it! This colour means optimism, happiness creativity and positivity. On the negative side it symbolises cowardice and egotism.
Yellow is the colour of sunshine, and thought to stimulate the left side of the brain, which sparks quick thinking. Children relate to this colour, hence thought of as the colour of innocence. On the cynical side this is why many toys are yellow.
GREEN
GREEN is the colour of balance in all that you do, particularly in your emotions, wealth, and good health. It revitalises us as the colour is a natural healer.
If you think of green houseplants or most of the plants in your garden or window box, the colour green is there to make you feel safe. A colour associated with Mother Earth, calm and security.
BLUE
BLUE: the colour of trust, loyalty, and honesty. It also has a relaxing effect on our psyche, which in turn gives us confidence and security. When we feel overwhelmed blue helps us mellow out and remain calm. Blue hates the idea of creating conflict and in a way likes to take a back seat, although there are some blue hues around these days that like to be more in the forefront!
If you are having a challenging day, try to find something blue to look at. If it’s a clear day look up at the sky and you will find an oasis of calm waiting there for you.

WHITE: connected with spiritual awakening, knowledge, light, love, and wholeness. It can also mean rebirth and renewal, innocence, and purity. Found in depictions of angels and their wings and their white auras.
It is the most positive colour in the spectrum and can also represent new beginnings and renewal. Perhaps that is why, when starting a new project most of tend to buy a new notebook with white pages – a fresh new start.
PINK
PINK – and finally the gentle colour of Pink, which we think is worth of a mention. Known to be the colour of compassion and love. It is an unthreatening colour full of femininity and romance! Colour Psychologists attribute this colour’s sultry side to its red undertones, whereas the white elements counteract this with purity.
Lack of confidence can be associated with Pink. However, it embodies good things in the world and not meant to threaten or intimidate!
MEANING OF COLOURS:
COLOUR EXPERIMENTS
Two experiments were conducted back in 2010. In one group men were asked to interact with women wearing either a red shirt, or those wearing another colour, like blue or green. In both experiments the women wearing the red shirts were more sought after and asked more questions.
The same research was carried out with women interacting with men and most women replied to having a stronger attraction to the men in a red shirt or sitting in front of a red backdrop.
So, as you can see, different colours affect our moods but none more than Red. Colour Psychologists believe that one can create chemistry by using the right colours to enhance our own mood and attracting people towards us!
