The 1930s Film of a Real Séance!
Bought to us by British Movietone News, this was the first-ever time that they ever recorded a séance with genuine mediums. Lady Conan Doyle was present to witness the event.
The medium concerned was Louisa Ann Meurig Morris (1899 to 1991), a well-known spiritualist and medium. Louisa had always had psychic gifts from a very early age.
She was considered one of the “real mediums” of those times. Later, she even won a libel case against the Daily Mail, who had questioned her mediumistic abilities!
When under the influence of the Spirit, Louisa’s usual, high, soprano voice would change to a deep and rather masculine baritone. You can also see this in her live trance mediumship in the film below.

Séances: Direct Connections with the Spirit World
Many real séances include a trance medium. This can be mighty impressive to see! Firstly, the participants of the séance will usually say a prayer.
Alternatively, they will state their intention to connect with the spirit world. It’s very important that amateurs don’t try this at home!! If you don’t know what you are doing, you could invite any kind of spirits to the party!
You honestly don’t want to do that! People who practice séances who are in the know have different and effective methods of spiritual protection.
After this initial “setting of intention,” the medium achieves a stillness in their mind and energy becomes altered. Spirits are then able to take over the medium’s mind, and sometimes, motor functions of their bodies.
This can give the impression that the medium has been completely taken over by the spirit. But actually, the medium is still present, often in a kind of semi sleeping state. This can be likened to a state of hypnosis.
The spirit can then often take over the medium, speak through their mouth (although still using the medium’s own vocal chords).
They can also sometimes manipulate the medium to give hand movements, and so forth. Again, you can see this in the film of Louisa Meurig Morris above.
Ectoplasm during a Séance
At times during a séance, a substance called ectoplasm is released. This can either emanate from the medium, from the spirit or be revealed as the production of an energetic link between the two.
It’s a bit like a cloud of energy. Some ectoplasm is visible to the human eye, and some are not. The density of this energy depends on the energy of the medium, the vibrational energy of the spirit, the warmness of the room, how many people are in it, and several other factors.
This ectoplasm, whether visible or not, can be very, very powerful. For example, it can prise open boxes, create pressure on material items, expand to push things over. So, this may be what we are seeing in the video.
It is unlikely that the spirit directly caused the heavy lighting we can see in the film, to fall down. However, it is quite possible that the high vibrational energy of the medium created this seemingly violent happening.
Other Kinds of Séance
Of course, it is possible to conduct a séance without a trance medium. Many successful spiritualist groups have done so, using mediums that can simply connect with spirit.
In this case, the medium can pass on messages from the spirit world. There may still be evidence of spiritual presence.
Other spiritualist groups conduct scientific experiments, including using cabinets and boxes for spirit materialisation, microphones, recordings and more.
